Abstract:

Mosquitoes pose a threat to our society in the context of spreading disease. Current traps are either expensive or ineffective, leaving the average person with a dilemma. In this study we will explore the effectiveness of different mosquito traps. We will use five different attractants, blue LED lights, violet LED lights, KCl, seltzer water, and sugar and yeast. The traps are set up in three different locations in Queens. The insects caught will be documented and the species will be identified by DNA barcoding. This experiment can potentially develop an inexpensive and effective mosquito trap while also studying the effectiveness on other species.
