From providing major ecosystem services, including wastewater treatment and nitrogen fixation, to even having adverse effects such as building deterioration, microbes are linked to human life in urban systems. Anthropogenic acitivites, mainly water pollution through a major flaw in New York City's sewage system, disturb the dynamics of microbial ecosystems through the introduction of a high density of non-indigenous microorganisms into natural waters. We will work with a lab at NYU to identify the changes that occur in microbiome composition from water pollution.
