Abstract:

This study aims to compare the freshwater macrobenthic invertebrates found in the Carlls River and the Nissequogue River. By utilizing a transverse kick sample technique, we will conduct an inventory and monitor the species richness and diversity at both sites. It is anticipated that the non-point source pollution from runoff and groundwater leaching will have an impact on the biotic indices of the invertebrates in these rivers. The headwaters of the Nissequogue River, which undergoes tidal flushes daily, are expected to exhibit greater diversity and overall health. On the other hand, the Carls River, originating south of Belmont Lake and lacking tidal fluctuations, is likely to suffer from reduced insect diversity and overall health within its river system.
