Abstract:

Biodiversity is the variety of different living organisms and their interactions. Biodiversity changes over time due to new evolving species and species that go extinct. There are three levels of diversity: species, ecosystem, and genetic biodiversity (Hancock, n.d.). New York is considered to be one of the most diverse cities in the world (McWeeney, 2020). According to New York Botanical Garden, “There are approximately 1250 species of plants that occur spontaneously in New York City” (NYBG, 2023). In Just New York City there are over one thousand species of plants such as mosses, ferns, grasses, sedges and rushes, wildflowers, trees, shrubs, and vines etc. (NATURAL AREAS NYC, n.d.). Plants biodiversity helps ensure resources for new food crops and medicine (Naturalhistory.edu). Plants are very important for us because they help maintain the balance of the ecosystem; plants reduce erosion, moderate the climate, protect watersheds, and provide shelter for many different species.
