Abstract:

Invasive species pose a threat to native species by increasing competition for resources. They can decrease biodiversity by harming habitats and causing extinction of native species. Flies are specifically being analyzed because of their economic impact on the food industry. They can cause contamination of fruits and other produce and pose a threat to the agricultural industry. Through genetic sequencing, this investigation strives to determine whether invasive species of flies are a problem on Long Island and which specific species pose the biggest threat. The results of this study will aid in informing and protecting the agricultural industry of Long Island.
