Abstract:

Jones Beach State Park was created in 1929 on Jones Island. The developed section of the beach spans over a distance of 2400 acres. The buildings are surrounded by landscapes that include planting beds with a large variety of flowering plants and shrubs. The outskirts of the State park are open expanses which are adorned with wild hedges and dunes planted with beach grass. These dunes have a much more vital function than merely ornamenting the beach. Theses beach grasses were planted intentionally, in order to stabilize the sand which was used to create the Beach. Beach grass ( Ammophila) grows in a variety of places including beaches along bays and oceans,harbors and along the bases of cliffs ,as seen in Long Island Sound. The dense root structure and its ability to penetrate and grow through accumulating sand, allows beach grass to form dunes.
