Abstract:

Formicidae, also known as ants, are a vital part of our ecosystem. Biodiversity of ants aids overall biodiversity, which is a symbol of a healthy ecosystem. Now, global climate change poses a threat to formicidae. Studies show that temperature has an immense effect on ant behavior and diversity, and rising temperatures globally are likely to negatively impact ants everywhere. To study this phenomenon, our team is going to collect and identify ant samples in our area, using taxonomy and DNA extraction methods to determine genus and species. Once we obtain this data, we will compare it to data collected in years past on ant biodiversity. This comparison will signify the effect that global climate change has had on formicidae populations, and demonstrate if there is a need for concern.
