Abstract:

Our main goal in performing this project is to discover the differences in organisms when affected by brown tide and any other algal blooms. To do this, we will be collecting organisms, specifically invertebrates such as worms and water and soil samples from the Heckscher State Park (Great South Bay) as our experimental group and Sunken Meadow State Park as our control group. Once we have completed this, we will perform tests to find the level of nutrients in the water as well as the differences in organisms between both locations. We would expect to see similar organisms in these two locations because the water and environments are similar. Because of the brown tide, we expect to see less biodiversity or different types of organisms in the areas where there was exposure to the brown tide. We expect to see less biodiversity in the Heckscher State Park location than in the Sunken Meadow State Park location.
