Abstract:

This study is intended to measure the biodiversity of insects in our school's garden in Flushing, New York, as well as the effect of environmental conditions on this diversity. We will determine whether changes in the environment between autumn and winter impact the diversity of insect species in the garden. In addition, we will determine whether the chemical defenses of plants in the garden affect insect biodiversity. This study will utilize both DNA barcoding and research on plant, fungus, and bacteria species to discern the relationships between various environmental conditions and insect biodiversity in the garden.
