Abstract:

Algae will be collected from various locations along the north and south shore of Long Island. It will be collected from dock poles at marinas where boats frequently dock and will be gathered at low tide. Observations will be made about the areas of collection and it will be recorded if the algae appears to be red, green, or red algae. The samples will be labeled and stored at Babylon High School. DNA barcode protocol and PCR will be used to determine which types of algae were collected from the various locations. This information will also be used to determine if different types of algae are more common in certain areas of Long Island and, if so, why that may be.
