Abstract:

This project will make use of the COI and rbcl genes to determine the level of biodiversity of insects or plants near the pond in the back of North Shore High School and near the plaque by the parking lot in the front of the school. All of the organism we are collecting will be taken within a six inch radius of an identifying pole in both locations. Since we are collecting the organisms after it has snowed, the organisms we find are able to withstand below freezing temperatures. Thus, the organisms we will collect will all share the trait of surviving and thriving in freezing temperatures. We hypothesize that the biodiversity of insects near the pond will be greater than the biodiversity by the plaque on the fence. This prediction is based on the fact that there is less human activity by the pond, and a more friendly and natural environment for organisms to thrive there.
