Abstract:

The purpose of this research is to identify insect species on Long Island in both saltwater and freshwater environments and compare the biodiversity. The species of insects found in each area may vary due to the different conditions of each environment. By identifying the definitive species, it provides the information to understand why the species present at each site. We intend to collect these samples from a variety of saltwater and freshwater ecosystems. This enables us to have a good sample size. The places chosen include state parks and preserves which guarantees that the organisms are naturally occurring. Our hypothesis states that there will be variation between the insect species in both saltwater and freshwater environments. We will be able to determine what specific species are present in one site and not the other as well as why they are present.
