Abstract:

In this Urban Barcoding Project, we seek to investigate what species of algae are contained within our culture bottles. Since our experiments have focused on environmental factors that increase growth, as well as methods for decreasing growth of algae, it is important that we know the exact species that are responding to our experimental variables. The original algae culture contained four species of algae: Nannochloropsis oculata, Tetraselmis chuii, Isochrysis Galbana (T-iso) and Dunaliella tertiolecta. The original sample was split amongst multiple bottles and the cultures were allowed to grow in preparation for experimental testing. We are curious to find out if all of the original species are still surviving in our culture bottles.
