Abstract:

We would like to compare the biodiversity of organisms collected at a site know to have mercury contamination and compare it to the biodiversity of an area that does not have contamination. In addition to testing at the BNL campus which is known to have contamination, we will be taking soil samples and collecting organisms at Gerry Park located in Roslyn NY. This park has no history of contamination and will be used as our control group. Barcoding can be useful for multiple reasons. It can help us properly identify species so we can properly assess their behaviors as well as helping us determine the biodiversity of the area. Our main goal in performing this project is to discover the differences in organisms and the behaviors of organisms when affected by mercury. To do this, we will be collecting organisms and soil samples from the Brookhaven National Laboratory as our experimental group and Gerry Park as our control group. Once we have completed this, we will perform tests to find th
