Abstract:

We have collected 20 samples of invertebrates that looked like amphipods, snails, a Hydra, and some small worms, possibly nematodes from the Peconic River during the “Day in the Life of the Peconic River” program on October 23, 2016, in collaboration with Stony Brook University, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and the Peconic River Estuary Program, to participate in Barcode Long Island. In this DNA barcoding of different species in the Peconic River experiment, we hope to: ● Identify the different biological species in the samples collected. ● Compare genetic diversity between species. ● Determine if a species is native or invasive. ● Explore relationships between the different species collected. ● Investigate the different species in the area that were recently altered by humans. ● Establish a baseline for biodiversity at the DEC Boat Ramp at Forge Pond in Riverhead.
