Abstract:

Our research question is, how do differences in human socioeconomic status affect plant biodiversity among urban communities? To help answer this question, we will be collecting plant samples in two different neighborhoods with opposing incomes. For the higher income range, we have chosen the wealthy neighborhood of DUMBO. For the opposite income range, we’ve scouted East New York. Studies show that higher income communities have more green space compared to low income communities. Therefore, our hypothesis is that high income neighborhoods in NYC will have greater plant biodiversity than low income neighborhoods in NYC because wealthier neighborhoods tend to have more public green spaces.
