Abstract:

In this experiment, English Ivy or Hedera helix, Bambusoideae, or common bamboo, and unknown invasive water plants were collected, along with soil and water samples around these samples. Both English Ivy and the common bamboo were chosen due to their invasive nature, as well as their availability in the given ecosystem, which was the Massapequa Preserve of Long Island, New York. In choosing the species for study, the Massapequa Preserve of Long Island’s native species were researched, as well as the invasive species found in the area. At the conclusion of the said research English Ivy and common bamboo were decided as the best species for this experiment. Species such as the ones collected may have a negative effect on the environment, which in turn may or will affect humans. The effects are not known until further studies are conducted, which is what this study intends to accomplish and further accumulate knowledge of these invasive plants.
