Abstract:

On Fire Island there are several ecosystems. The dunes on Fire Island are home to many species of plants and animals. Some of the plants are exclusive to only one type of dune. For example the Red Cedars are on the Swale but not on the primary dune. There are many more examples of how a species lives in one location, but not others. It may seem odd that two areas on the same small island would have so many differences. These dunes, being on the same small island, obviously have many of the same environmental characteristics, such as similar rainfall and similar cloud coverage. However, their environments are clearly different enough to result in different vegetation.
