A habitat that is highly diverse, biologically, would have a better chance of making balancing adjustments in order for it to survive a change or a threat. A habitat that has little biodiversity is more likely to be more vulnerable to changes or threats (Maritime Aquarium, 2015). We choose to study the biodiversity of Gardiner’s Park with regards to an invasive species, Phragmites australis, so that more can be understood about many other Long Island ecosystems that are and will be affected by disruptions in their biodiversity. Invasive species like this one, can decrease the overall diversity of the plants and therefor disrupt the corresponding food webs that are native to the area. We will study some of the invertebrate community in the P. australis habitat at 3 locations in Gardiners Park. The pond, the marsh and the bay ecosystems.
