Abstract:

The purpose of our investigation is to study the biodiversity of seaweed in various salinities of the Nissequogue River to determine whether or not some species have the tolerance to thrive in higher or lower salinities. While traveling down the river, at approximately every mile, we plan to take samples of the variety of seaweed species present and record exact data of our sample including salinity, GPS location, water temperature, pH, and depth of the sample. The purpose of this experiment is to further our knowledge of the species of seaweed present in the Nissequogue and inform us of their tolerance to various environmental factors. This knowledge is crucial to learn for future preservation of the hundreds of thousands of species that depend on the seaweed throughout the food webs.
