Abstract:

By participating in the Long Island Barcode Project and researching bamboo species on Long Island, our main goal is to analyze and discover the types of invasive bamboo that are currently growing on Long Island. Once the DNA of the different bamboo samples is analyzed, we would be able to figure out which species it is. If possible, we would also like to try and find out where the bamboo species originated from, and learn not only which country they’re native to but also which shops imported and sold the bamboo plants. As bamboo is not indigenous to the TriState area, much less Long Island, it would be beneficial to research how it has spread, and know the effects that it currently has on our ecosystems in order to try predict the influence it will have in the near future.
